Keeping Well and This is How We Do It...

I'm not a global expert. I'm a local expert, and by local I mean in my own home. But, people often ask me what we do for illness. Most folks who know me know I don't love doctors. It has nothing to do with bedside manor, or fear, just that I don't believe in what they're selling. It's just my opinion really, based on all the life experiences I've had and witnessed. Modern Meds are still in their infancy compared to the many ancient healing techniques now treated like voodoo. Can meds work? Sure. Can they be Risky? Ineffective? Expensive? Devastating? Yep. They can. And, more often than not they come riddled with a looooong list of tiny words at the bottom of the screen (aka side effects) that require some other med to be tolerable. I don't like it. I also think the angle of the modern med world is skewed.**

My body is not a lemon--Ina May Gaskin says so. And, my body, if it's healthy can heal itself. Some people call them miracles when this happens, and ultimately it is. Our bodies are MI. RA. CU. LOUS. They do all the work, they do all the healing--if they're healthy. They were expertly designed to co-exist in this world of germs. No amount of meds can heal someone who's body is unhealthy. They may temporarily hide the symptoms of unwellness, but let me repeat, they will not heal an unhealthy body.

I just saw this quote on this blog:
"We all know that colds are caused by cold viruses, spread through contact with others infected with them.
But you don’t get a cold because you’re around snotty-nosed kids who have colds. You get them because your immune system is impaired and unable to fend off the attack of the virus. Exposure to the virus itself doesn’t mean that getting the cold is inevitable."

  1. Totally agree. We also enjoy an immunity syrup blend that includes elderberry and reishi. Thanks for the great tip of using the oil with the Thieves blend. Definitely adding it to my purse!

    1. Jenny, sounds great! Now we are looking into planting some elderberry trees to have syrup on hand whenever we need it. That mix might be better!

    2. We have elderberry growing wild, but I have to beat the birds to them! If necessary, I trade with a friend. The syrup is delicious, so no fussing about taking it :)

  3. Whereas I usually consider us to be relatively healthy, we've had a time with it this year! I also get discouraged when I'm doing many of the things you mentioned and we still get hit hard, but I always wonder if it wouldn't have been worse w/o all the preventative measures! This year, I've had a 4 thieves tonic that you drink around, not the oil that is most commonly found online; I make it myself. I also have homemade elderberry echinacea syrup, honey with lemon and ginger steeped in it, homemade vapor rub with our own beeswax and essential oils in it. Last night I took a detox bath that I was hoping would be helpful with epsom salts, baking soda, ginger powder, eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil, but it didn't seem to do much. We also do lots of vit. C. I hate being sick, and I'm very sick right now! :( The congestion and coughs have been so bad this go round that I've been using Hyland's Nighttime Cold & Cough 4 Kids, a natural homeopathic available at most stores. It seems to help. And when the fever hits over 103.5, I give them ibuprofen or acetimenaphen to knock it down. I let them run fevers up until that point though so their bodies can fight it off.

    1. agreed. sometimes it can still get bad, but i think you're definitely right--who knows where you'd be without all the extras you're doing. My only additional suggestion would be adding oregano essential oil to your feet. It's a great antibiotic and with fevers and it lasting a long time, well those are signs of infection. Maybe that could also help. Thanks for your additional suggestions! We use a lot of hyland's products too. But, a detox bath is a great idea!
