Presents for a Braniac

Birthdays Can Be Treacherous

We're mid-birthday-month right now. Naomi and I have birthdays at the beginning of October, which involved nearly a week's worth of festivities this year, and Leviah's is at the end of the month. Birthdays can mean an onslaught of plastic nonsense that clutters are hallways and bedroom floors. Sure, they initially have a special place in the closet but the '1 toy at a time' rule is just so darn hard to enforce! We're trying to think of some new approaches, this one is particularly intriguing...

Anyway, after purging a ton of toys, games and clothing before the birthdays (as is a yearly tradition) the last thing I wanted to do was restock on unnecessities. So, we went basic.

Origami Paper

and my personal favorite, a Fraction Circle. This thing is awesome! She put off playing with until I forced her last week. I knew when she opened it she's too old for me to dupe her into thinking learning toys are good gifts. But, she thanked us and quickly opened another.

When I finally did encourage her to pull it out to see what it was all about we all fell in love! I'll let the pictures give a better idea:

there's an empty circle frame to which you add from the many fraction pieces that came with.

you can see how having 12/12's is the same as 1 whole circle, like like 2/2's.
Plus you can mix and match fractions.

Everyone took a turn coming up with things, comparing 2/8's to 1/4, etc.
Which piece of pumpkin pie do you want?

Anyway--this inexpensive manipulative (and everything in Sima Design's shop) does make a great gift!

To Eat and Play

Play for me:: I'm excited to try and make these for myself when I get a spare minute. I'd actually played with trying to make a similar pattern a few years ago and gave up frustrated. Thanks M.S. for making it easier for me...
Play for the girls:: This was Leviah's b-day present. We ALL have enjoyed it as much as she does, it never gets old to try different ways of stacking/balancing them. There are a lot of toys from this shop that we want...
Food for us all:: (which turned into play as they arranged it themselves) Lunch for today.
sliced apples with dad's home-made yogurt (from raw local milk) & local honey from our own hives! Pretty decent ensemble on the fly. As we try to cut wheat/carbohydrates out as a mainstay in our lives, it's little victories like this lunch that help me know pb&j's and mac&cheese aren't the only things my kids will eat...

Some more options that are carb-free & kid friendly:
Peanut Butter and Celery
Dried Fruit
Cashews
Almonds
Cheese (like baybel, slices, cuts of whatever we have)
Cottage Cheese
Plain yogurt with honey
Carrots

what are some of your lunch time staples?

toddler toy

This is quick, easy, & entertaining for the littler ones. Leviah gets 2 uses: 1. rolling to a new destination & 2. opening the top, dumping, and refilling the can. (if the second use isn't one you approve of, just tape or adhere the lid on so it's not an option for your child).

What you need:
Tube container (oatmeal, yogurt, a can with a cardboard end)
about 5 feet of yarn
Dried beans
Using a hammer and a phillip's head screw driver punch holds in either end of your tube. String yarn through both holes & tie knots to keep it from pulling through (a small stick to tie the yarn around would be great, too)
Fill the can with beans & put the lid on.
Roll away!

Counting & Bagging Beans

Back to the old grindstone...

I've been out for the count when it comes to child-rearing. They're alive & fed, but these past few weeks have been slow going when it comes to brain food & entertainment. I'm fully recovered from the ills of weeks past & everyone seems on the mend. What a rough winter!
The sun has blessed us with rays of inspiration & today--after taking the weekend & monday to re-coop some of the damage done by several weeks of neglect--we are back on it.

It's like the metronome battery is recharged.

So, beans are on today's menu. Naomi & Drew worked on 'math' skills making a chart of numbers 1-10 & counting out the appropriate amount of beans for each number square.

Then, Naomi begged to sew. "I'm a five year old, so that means I can sew now," she declares.

A quick bean bag project out of the captivating fabric given me by this fine lady & that.

I'm sure this new & 'sew simple' toy will bring hours of fun. It's already brought 1...

Babushka or Matryoshka?

We keep bumping into these adorable traditional Russian nesting dolls.
First we got this great book from the library. It's really cute, with great pictures. Naomi loves it.

Then I found this great pattern that I'm going to try this week--consider that a promise !-) or should I make these?

& there's this beautiful fabric by Heather Ross.
A cute card-craft.

& there are more books that look great on this 'subject':
