Hello Twenty Twelve! And, A Vintage High Chair

So, there's always potential that the fresh, clean, new year is full of promise. It is, as was last year. I don't want to forget or think that it's time to start over--last year was great. We had a baby, who is amazing. We, well...we had a baby. Really, anything else pales. We had fun, lots of it. Friends getting married, celebrations, holidays, business growing, vintage boothing, markets, shabbats, countless hours spent lolly-gagging and dreaming together. All in all 2011 is and was exactly what I hope every year is: joyful.

That said, there's always room for improvement. I don't have a long list of things to change, but things are always moving and shaking around here. Like rearranging furniture, there are certain habits that can use a good dusting, places that could stand a meeting with a vacuum. Our rhythm needs some fine tuning...again.

We are taking deep breaths and thinking about all this. What parts of our daily lives are important to us? What aren't? What are beneficial to our children and ourselves? What dust bunnies need to come out of hiding and where should we re-settle the furniture in the coming months? It's all in my mind.

One thing that I've determined important to me is this space. This little nook of the web where I deposit thoughts, photos, inspiration, dreams and sometimes even pain. This hidden alcove of intimate Grim moments is a sort of refuge where I know I can share something and come back to it, often I even get feedback. Though it doesn't encompass the entirety of us, it is a log of where we've been and looking over the last 3 years of postings is unspeakably meaningful for me. I thank God for the friends who encouraged me to join this 'blogging' world (and out of it), when I scroll through old posts there are bits and bobs that would be forgotten if not documented. A million pictures can't always express the thoughts that go with them...So, my hope is to be more diligent and focused with this space. Maybe a little more frequent, a little more personal, a little more of the kids...that's a goal.

I'm not entirely sure how well I mesh my vintage life with this blog, but I sell vintage stuff. It's a habit that can really help give us some extra money and it's been growing, particularly these last few months. Well, if you come to my house you'll see quickly that vintage is more than something I sell, it's something I've surrounded our family in (sometimes we're bursting at the seams with inventory!). Decor, furniture, clothing...there are a lot of ladies like me out there, filling their homes with goods that aren't new, but come pre-loved, broken in and somewhat free of the guilt of consumerism.

For example, we needed a new high chair. We bought one for Naomi at Ikea SEVEN! years ago. well, the tray broke, the plastic is grubby, the buckle frayed and fell off--hardly a stand-the-test-of-time article. So, instead of rebuying one from Ikea, I did a little hunting. It was inconvenient and required the compliance of my parents who picked it up for me, and the lady in Raleigh who was willing to take it out of her way...but, we have a superbly adorable high chair that has years on our cheap Ikea one, and will be adorable long beyond Eliza is through. It's fantastic, (and it was cheap), and I just have to share a picture...

This is most definitely something a little ordinary about our lives, the addition of something vintage that makes me smile. But, it's a little miraculous. I've also set my mind on--coming out of the season of miracles--not to overlook the little things that bring joy into our lives because I'm sure that they are gifts from the One who loves us. Not every miracle needs to be headline-news-worthy. But, the more I open my mind to noticing them, the more I allow myself to realize the many many miracles that fill up our days, the more delightful life is.

Books, Moments, Growing-ons...

we brought home a truck load of vintage delights last Friday.
They are making themselves right at home.
The girls found a big box in the living room--left from a co-op order from Frontier. (If you're not already in one, you should get one started in your area--great prices!)
It's even more entertaining when it's full of biodegradable packing 'popcorn'.
We've got some seedlings under a grow light. There are also a few coming up in our greenhouse--and with weather like we enjoyed yesterday, there are so many signs that Spring will soon be here...
And this morning we baked some coffee cake from a book you've probably heard of, but for some reason it's still mysterious to me...& Rudyard Kipling's The Cat That Walked By Himself is the first story in Tasha Tudor's book--it's so enlightening as to the relationship between animals and humans.

Also, I re-added the book widget from Indie Bound in the sidebar. It's for my own keeping track, but I hope you'll browse it & even offer suggestions!

Scores

I've had some fortune when it comes to finding awesomeness in my daily searching. Not all is pictured, I don't want you to hate me!
First, & most exciting: a Vintage RCA Radio that I think can work again. It even has a chord tucked away inside & could use a battery...I'm not electrician, but it may be simple enough for my tinkering self. If you have some inside knowledge, please share!
Second, a sweet vintage collapseable shopping tote, it's a little beat up, but hasn't lost it's charm. I think Naomi will enjoy this, maybe for her playsilk collection as the last basket has fallen apart.
And there's all these:
And something not vintage:
I just couldn't pass this up at the fabric store this morning, but what shall I do with the 3 yards I brought home?? I'm thinking something for leviah would be nice...suggestions please!

Vintage Homesteading

While we're not living out there yet, we have made steps to make such a notion somewhat comfortable...I've even started 'nesting', so to speak. My sewing machine is glad, as it's been well loved, the end of which is not soon to come (note the curtains).

Sorry I don't have a before picture, but here's the outside & imagine all the cushions covered in the lovely 'before' upholstery. Not the worst I've seen, but there was a lot of unidentified staining....ew.

Meeting People & selling things...

she was spunky.

What a beautiful (yet hot & windy) day it was yesterday! Those of you we bumped into, hope you had a great time at the Shindig--it seemed to be a huge success, I know we walked away having had a great time.

It's so refreshing to meet new people & learn more about the folks that make up our community. That is what's missing in the internet-shopping world. There's so much you can learn from chatting with someone about an old honey pot or antique ball gown. The memories, the hope, the excitement of remembering how much simpler things were, and in many ways hot everything is still the same... (Gremlina vintage set up shop at the event).

Days like yesterday really grow my desire for having a steady location, a community gathering place where folks can come play dress up & be nostalgic. What a vision I have for a place...

Anyway, I'm stopping in, after a long day of recuperation, to share just a few pics. I really only took 5--we were BUSY! & to encourage everyone, near & far, to get out to the next street festival in your town, to shop or sell. They are such a great way to see what is really going on near you.

Work and progress...

remember this? probably not...

they say it takes 3 times, in the marketing world, for folks to actually act on what they've seen. Initial inspiration came here. Then again here. & I was reminded of to pick it up again here. Thanks to you all! I'm now inspired by the formation I see happening.

Selling on Etsy...

I have really enjoyed Etsy in so many ways. First--the shopping. Second--the inspiration. Third--the community of great people I've come to know on account of it. Fourth--the 'shop' I'm able to keep to meet that craving for a 'business' of my own. Thank you Etsy for coming to the world & reminding everyone how talented they are!!

My talent? Well, perhaps there are others, but: being at the right place at the right time. Such an occurrence took place this afternoon & so I reveal to you some pictures of vintage delight. Like draping my dress form in layers of candy...delicious. There's not pictured, but i'm having some technical difficulties with the zipper. We'll get it.

So, which is your favorite? Surely there's one...

Vintage Swap Results

You may have noticed the Vintage Swap button in the left sidebar. Heather of Shivaya Naturals started this fantastic activity & this was my first go-round participating, what fun!

First I met a sweet lady, & then I slowly gathered a mixture of items to send her:

Then, a few days after her package was sent out, I received this in return:

I made out with some really sweet finds, like doilies that make me grin & material to inspire more crafting, note cards, & even an awesome tunic that I can't wait to wear! Nicely done Tracy--it was a pleasure to 'meet' you! & thanks Heather for organizing something just for smiles.

Making the Old New

I love Friday posts. At random intervals throughout the weekend I love dropping in on blogs to see how folks wrap up their weeks.

Here's how I'll wrap up ours with things I haven't already mentioned.

We spent a lot of time in the house which was relaxing even though I've had a cough & sore throat for all of it. Drew being stuck here made my life so much easier & the girls love the entertainment only a da-da can provide.
We made another craft this morning--wild bird feeders out of pinecones, peanut butter, sunflower seeds & grapefruit rinds.

Also, on Tuesday my sister & I visited a new thrift store near-by. It's always exciting to find new old stuff. ;) They had soooo many things from my childhood, it was like my mother had just emptied the attic of things I know she emptied years ago. Memory, a Lite Brite, Girl Talk the game, a peddle-less riding toy... I didn't buy it all, but here's what I left with:
greensboro thrift store
vintage block prints: made by Gwen Frostic
Gymboree Summer Jumper
Gravy Skimmer
Wicker Basket with leather latch--love this, what should it hold?
The original Memory--we've already played twice & these images are embedded in my own memory from when I originally played.
Embroidery hoops--one can never have too many ;)
A string art kit--make or sell?
Felt characters--perfect addition to our felt board set.

not pictured are loads of great kids clothes & an electrolux electric broom that i had to order the charger for...i'd been wanting one, hopefully this will work!

Oh, and my dear husband is in the local Business Journal today! Pictured & quoted! It's not the most uplifting article, but I'm so proud of him. Who'd have ever thought we'd be business owners...
